They have been considered as a link between the Fixed partial prosthesis and the removable partial prosthesis because they have characteristics common to both types of prosthesis; allowing minimal torsion on the abutment teeth which is not possible in the conventional fixed partial prosthesis and eliminating the patient's aesthetic discomfort of visible retainers, as in the case of a removable prosthesis.
