Both of you may feel an increased level of anxiety. We must keep behavioral principles in mind when treating these special children and present ways to reduce anxiety in both the child and ourselves. The handicapped child has a mental, emotional defect that interferes with his or her ability in all activities of life. This can prevent him from functioning normally even though he experiences the same biological and physical needs as any child. Each normal or handicapped child is an individual and has a unique behavior that must be understood by the dentist to achieve appropriate dental care. Certain physical-mental conditions necessitate the prescription of drugs to alleviate the symptoms that arise from the condition. Apart from drugs prescribed for therapeutic purposes, patients may be using other so-called recreational drugs and exceed their medication bill. When these patients present to the office seeking treatment, the dentist may need to prescribe additional drugs such as tranquilizers, prophylactic antibiotics, local anesthetic points and analgesics to achieve optimal care. Cuando estos pacientes se presentan en el consultorio en busca de tratamiento, el odontólogo puede necesitar la prescripción de drogas adicionales tales como tranquilizantes, antibióticos por profilaxis, puntos anestésicos locales y analgésicos para lograr una atención óptima.
