Initially, a history is taken to determine the reason for the consultation, inquiring about the patient's medical, psychological, and dental history. The patient's general appearance, movements, posture, reactions, and asymmetries are observed; whether they are taking any drugs or suffer from serious illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, respiratory diseases, allergies, and the possibility of pregnancy and its progression. The intraoral examination should include inspection and palpation of all intraoral structures; the condition of the gums, oral health habits, the presence of calculus and plaque, caries, restorations, edentulous areas, and the presence of prostheses. The soft tissue inspection and palpation includes the lips, mucous membranes, frenulum, palate, oropharynx, tongue, and floor of the mouth.Para hacer un buen diagnóstico acerca de las posibles patologías del paciente es necesario contar con una buena historia clínica. Inicialmente, se hace un interrogatorio o anamnesis, para saber el motivo de consulta, indagando sobre la historia médica, psíquica y odontológica. Se observa el aspecto general del paciente, sus movimientos, posturas, reacciones y asimetrías; si está tomando algún tipo de droga o si padece enfermedades graves como diabetes, cardiopatías, artritis, enfermedades respiratorias, alergias, posibilidad de embarazo y evolución del mismo. El examen intrabucal debe incluir la inspección y la palpación de todas las estructuras intrabucales; el estado de las encías, hábitos de salud oral, presencia de cálculos y placa bacteriana, caries, restauraciones, zonas desdentadas y presencia de prótesis.
