MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 120 patients attending dental appointments at the institution during the first semester of 2009. The variables measured were age, gender, socioeconomic status, educational level, occupation, and the perceived effectiveness and rating of the signage. A survey with 18 items was used, the last section of which varied depending on the tower where the patient was seen. RESULTS: The highest participation rate was among individuals aged 46 to 55 years (34.2%), female (62.5%), belonging to socioeconomic status 3 (48.3%), and with a secondary education level (33.3%). The most frequent occupation was housewives (26.7%). Data was collected from 37 patients (30.8%) in Tower A and from 83 patients (69.2%) in Tower B. 74.2% reported not seeing any signs or notices to help them find their way around the building, and 89.2% felt that the signs and notices within the institution should be improved. CONCLUSIONS: The responses obtained show that the signage used at the Colegios de Colombia University Institution is not adequate and therefore ineffective in guiding patients through the different sections of the institution. A large percentage of participants suggested changing and improving the existing signage.Determinar la efectividad de la señalética de áreas para la orientación de los pacientes dentro de las torres A y B de la Institución Universitaria Colegios de Colombia, sede Cali, durante el 2009-I. MATERIALES Y MÉTODOS: Se realizó un estudio transversal con una muestra conformada por 120 pacientes que asistían a consulta odontológica en la institución durante el 2009-I. Se midieron las variables edad, género, estrato, nivel educativo, ocupación, determinación y calificación de la señalética, para lo cual se utilizó un formato tipo encuesta con un total de 18 ítems, cuya última parte variaba dependiendo de la torre en la que fuera atendido el paciente. RESULTADOS: Hubo mayor participación de personas con edades entre 46 y 55 años (34,2%), del género femenino (62,5%), pertenecientes al estrato 3 (48,3%) y con nivel educativo de secundaria (33,3%). La ocupación más frecuente fueron las amas de casa (26,7%). A 37 pacientes (30,8%) se les realizó la toma de datos en la torre A y a 83 pacientes (69,2%) en la torre B. El 74,2% manifestó no observar alguna señal o aviso que los ubicara dentro del edificio y el 89,2% consideró que se deberían mejorar las señales y avisos dentro de la institución. CONCLUSIONES: Las respuestas obtenidas evidencian que la señalética utilizada en la Institución Universitaria Colegios de Colombia no es la más adecuada, por lo cual no resulta efectiva para orientar a los pacientes en las diferentes secciones de la institución.
