Materials and methods: A community study was conducted with a sample of 246 students from the 5th to 9th semesters. Three activities were carried out during the course of the research: 1) A survey to measure students' knowledge of the Evacuation Plan; 2) Presentation of an educational video about the existing Evacuation Plan for UNICOC and distribution of a brochure with the topics covered in the video; and finally, 3) Administration of the survey to verify the effectiveness of the proposal. The variables evaluated were sex, socioeconomic status, semester, and knowledge. Results: At the beginning of the research, 39.9% of the students had adequate knowledge of the institution's evacuation plan; 32.5% knew the evacuation order signal; 11.1% were aware of the established command post; 38.3% of the students knew the members of the first aid and fire teams; 74.9% knew the components of the command post; 51.9% knew who evacuated through Tower A, 9.1% those who evacuated through Tower B, and 58.4% those who evacuated through the central stairwell. These percentages showed differences after the conclusion of the investigation (55.1%, 84%, 21%, 47.7%, 77.8%, 38.7%, 23%, and 59.7%, respectively). Knowledge of concepts such as threat, vulnerability, and prevention was also assessed. The level of statistical significance was p<0.05 for knowledge of evacuation plans and for students in their sixth semester. Conclusions: At the end of the investigation, the effectiveness of the proposal, which consisted of an educational video accompanied by a brochure, was verified, given that there were increases in the percentages of questions related to the topic of Evacuation Plan, and that were verified with the completion of the second survey.Objetivo: Determinar la efectividad de una propuesta educativa sobre el Plan de Evacuación de los estudiantes de la Institución Universitaria Colegios de Colombia-UNICOC durante el primer semestre del 2010 Materiales y métodos: Ensayo comunitario, con una muestra de 246 estudiantes de 5to a 9no semestre. Se realizaron 3 actividades durante el transcurso de la investigación: 1) Una encuesta para medir el conocimiento que los estudiantes tenían sobre el Plan de Evacuación; 2) Presentación de un video educativo sobre el Plan de Evacuación existente para el UNICOC y entrega de folleto con los temas tratados en el video; y finalmente, 3) Realización de la encuesta para comprobar la efectividad de la propuesta. Se evaluaron las variables sexo, estrato socioeconómico, semestre y conocimiento. Resultados: Al inicio de la investigación el 39.9% de los estudiantes tenían conocimientos adecuados sobre el plan de evacuación de la institución; el 32.5% conocían la señal de orden de evacuación; el 11.1% tenían conocimiento sobre el puesto de comando establecido; el 38.3% de los estudiantes conocían las personas que conforman los grupos de primeros auxilios e incendios; el 74.9% conocían los elementos que componen el puesto de comando; el 51.9% conocían quienes evacuan por la torre A, el 9.1% los que evacuan por la torre B y el 58.4% por las escaleras centrales; estos porcentajes mostraron diferencias tras la culminación de la investigación (55.1%, 84%, 21%, 47.7%, 77.8%, 38.7%, 23% y 59.7% respectivamente); también fueron evaluados algunos conocimientos sobre conceptos como amenaza, vulnerabilidad y prevención. El nivel de significancia estadístico fue p<0.05 en el caso del conocimiento sobre los planes de evacuación y los estudiantes pertenecientes a 6to semestre.
