Therefore, it is believed that all dentists should have a clear understanding of the basic principles for selecting ideal patients for oral implantology. To this end, we have created a manual to serve as a guide for private practice and the clinics of the Colombian Dental Association, in order to identify and select suitable patients and make the appropriate referrals. Oral implantology initially arose to solve the problems affecting patients with complete edentulism. Over time, its application has expanded to the rehabilitation of patients with partial edentulism, as well as to support the mouth with osseointegrated implants and maxillofacial prostheses. This requires general dentists to stay updated and acquire new knowledge, as well as to be aware of any systemic or local conditions the patient may have, in order to offer their patients new alternatives for their oral rehabilitationEl desarrollo de la odontología moderna ha generado diferentes alternativas de rehabilitación oral para pacientes edéntulos totales y parciales. Por esto se cree que todos los odontólogos deben tener una visión clara de los principios básicos para la selección de pacientes ideales para implantología oral. Para ello pensamos en realizar un manual que sirva como guía en la práctica privada y en las clínicas del Colegio Odontológico Colombiano, con el fin de identificar y seleccionar los pacientes aptos y así poder hacer su remisión respectiva. La implantología oral surge inicialmente para solucionar los problemas que aquejaban a los edéntulos totales. Con el tiempo su aplicación se ha extendido a la rehabilitación de pacientes edéntulos parciales, también a soportar por medio de implantes osteointegrados y prótesis maxilofaciales.
