In many ways, this is still true, due to the natural limitations imposed by the environment in which human dentition is found when we proceed to correct defects. Clinical experience and the information accumulated over the years provide us with a picture of the current state of dentistry, which can be seen in the growing body of information. Distraction osteogenesis is a new technique that has been used successfully, but requires a thorough literature review for its study and applicability. The aim is to introduce all general dentists to a new alternative for treating patients who require it, because despite being a technique that has been used for about forty years, it is still not widely known. The goal is to provide general dentists with knowledge regarding its physiology and its applicability in orthognathic surgery, implants, and malformations. It is important to understand that distraction osteogenesis is a process by which bone is gradually lengthened. This procedure not only achieves elongation of the bone but also of the soft tissues that cover it.Tradicionalmente la odontología siempre midió sus cambios y avances en incrementos muy pequeños. En muchos sentidos, esto aún es cierto, debido a las limitaciones naturales impuestas por el medio en la cual se halla la dentición humana cuando procedemos a corregir defectos. La experiencia clínica y la información acumulada durante años nos brindan un cuadro del estado actual en odontología que puede apreciarse en la creciente información. La distracción osteogénica es una nueva técnica que ha sido utilizada satisfactoriamente, la cual requiere una adecuada revisión bibliográfica para su estudio y su aplicabilidad. Dar a conocer a todos los odontólogos generales una nueva alternativa para un tratamiento de un paciente que lo requiera; porque a pesar de ser una técnica la cual se maneja hace alrededor de cuarenta años es muy poco conocida. Lograr aportar un conocimiento al odontólogo general en cuanto su fisiología y su aplicabilidad en cirugía ortognática, implantes y malformaciones.
