The limited information available regarding oroantral communications of dental origin necessitates this research. Its purpose is to inform both general dentists and specialists about the importance of the maxillary sinus as an anatomical structure adjacent to the field of practice and its potential risk of complications. Furthermore, it aims to provide dentists with guidelines to reduce the risk of creating oroantral communications. The objective of this research is to determine the frequency of oroantral communications caused by intrusion of endodontic material into the maxillary sinus and by traumatic extractions. This study also aimed to identify the anatomical relationship of the maxillary sinus and dental structures with respect to the development of oroantral communications in patients treated at the Colombian Dental College. Regarding the methodology, a descriptive, exploratory study was conducted on patients treated in the undergraduate and postgraduate clinics of the Colombian Dental College who presented with an existing oroantral communication or whose communication developed during their treatment at this institution during the 1997 academic year.El seno maxilar es una estructura anatómica que se encuentra íntimamente relacionada con los ápices radiculares de los dientes caninos, premolares y molares superiores, creando un riesgo potencial de alterar la fisiología del seno maxilar cuando se trabaja sobre dichos dientes. La poca información existente con respecto a las comunicaciones oroantrales de origen dentario hacen necesaria esta investigación con el propósito de informar tanto al odontólogo general como al especialista la importancia del Seno Maxilar como estructura anatómica adyacente al campo de acción y su riesgo potencial de posibles complicaciones y a su vez dar pautas al odontólogo para que pueda reducir el riesgo de la producción de comunicaciones oroantrales. El objetivo de esta investigación es determinar la frecuencia con que se presentan las comunicaciones oroantrales causadas por intrusión de material endodóntico dentro del Seno Maxilar y por exodoncias traumáticas; como también identificar la relación anatómica del Seno Maxilar y las estructuras dentarias con respecto a la producción de dichas comunicaciones oroantrales en los pacientes atendidos en el Colegio Odontológico Colombiano.
