MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional observational study was conducted. The sample consisted of 264 clinical records randomly selected from the pediatric dentistry unit at UNICOC. The variables identified included malocclusion, oral habits, sex, socioeconomic status, age, crowding, overjet, molar relationship, Angle classification, overbite, facial profile, facial asymmetry, dental midline, and lip tonicity; data were collected using an 8-item survey that had been previously validated through a pilot test. RESULTS: 52.5% of the subjects were male, 64.3% belonged to middle socioeconomic strata, and the mean age was 8.4 years. Mouth breathing and atypical swallowing were the most frequent oral habits (41.8% each). Class I molar malocclusion showed the highest prevalence (66.5%). Frontal facial examination revealed symmetry in 53.2% of cases, a centered midline in 82.9%, and normal lip tonicity in 59.3%. Crowding was present in 76% of the subjects. CONCLUSIONS: A high prevalence of oral habits was observed; these habits are conditions that can initiate, predispose to, or aggravate dental malocclusion in children.OBJETIVO GENERAL: Identificar las maloclusiones y los factores asociados que fueron reportados en historias clínicas de niños de 6 a 13 años que asistieron a la unidad de odontopediatría de la Institución Universitaria Colegios de Colombia durante el primer semestre del 2009.
