The molecular and pathogenic characteristics of its etiological agent, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), have presented a challenge to medical science, making it one of the most difficult syndromes to treat. Since 1981, numerous institutions and a large number of researchers have attempted to find a cure for this disease; however, the percentage of infected patients has increased every year worldwide, as is the case in Brazil, Africa, and the vast majority of Asian countries. In Colombia, there are no significant statistical data that allow for a clear determination of the true situation of patients with AIDS, since the existing data are highly biased and unreliable. This study aims to show the incidence of the AIDS virus in Colombia, recorded between 1983 and 1997, according to age, sex, and department, as well as to provide better information for the treatment of infected patients, including knowledge of the oral manifestations of the virus.El Síndrome de Inmunodeficiencia Adquirida (SIDA) ha sido considerado la enfermedad del siglo XX. Las características moleculares y patogénicas de su agente etiológico, el Virus de la Inmunodeficiencia Humana (VIH), han representado un desafío para la ciencia médica, convirtiéndolo en uno de los síndromes más difíciles de tratar. Desde 1981, numerosas instituciones y un gran número de investigadores han intentado encontrar una cura para esta enfermedad; sin embargo, el porcentaje de pacientes infectados ha aumentado cada año a nivel mundial, como es el caso de Brasil, África y la gran mayoría de los países asiáticos. En Colombia, no existen datos estadísticos significativos que permitan determinar con claridad la situación real de los pacientes con SIDA, ya que los datos existentes son altamente sesgados y poco fiables.
