Esto representa aproximadamente el 12% de los casos documentados de lesiones periapicales. El constante progreso en las técnicas patológicas para la toma de muestras y resultado de ellas, se permite ampliar la capacidad diagnóstica para el paciente. Pero para decidir una conducta terapéutica, el patrón de oro sigue siendo la toma de biopsias del tejido, con lo que se obtiene información no sólo de la histología del proceso, sino también del análisis inmunohistoquímico del mismo, o del cultivo, si se trata de un proceso infeccioso.
