Unfortunately, rehabilitation with removable partial dentures in our country is often performed with a lack of knowledge on the subject, relegating treatment processes to the dental technician, who is completely unaware of the patient’s oral and functional characteristics, leading to failure in the long term. The biomechanical behavior and periodontal response of removable partial dentures are two aspects of great importance that must be taken into account and are often not managed appropriately by dental professionals and students. For this reason, we undertook this literature review to compile information on the characteristics and behavior of the components that make up the removable partial denture, placing greater emphasis on their biomechanical and periodontal management; based on studies conducted to provide us with greater knowledge and, thus, improve the criteria and procedures to be followed in the treatment of a partially edentulous patient who will be treated with a removable partial denture.Resumen La prótesis parcial removible es una de las varias formas de rehabilitación que realizamos en nuestra práctica diaria para devolver a nuestros pacientes funciones tan importantes como masticación, deglución, fonación y estética de la manera más adecuada posible. Desafortunadamente la rehabilitación con prótesis parcial removible en nuestro país es realizada con una falta de conocimiento del tema, relegando los procesos del tratamiento al técnico dental, el cual desconoce completamente las características orales y funcionales del paciente generando a largo plazo, el fracaso. El comportamiento biomecánico y la respuesta periodontal de la prótesis parcial removible son dos aspectos de gran importancia que deben ser tenidos en cuenta y en muchas ocasiones no son manejados de manera apropiada por profesionales y alumnos de odontología.
