Therefore, there is a need to understand the growth and development patterns of the temporomandibular joint structures in the Colombian population to achieve accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. The purposes of this study were: to establish a knowledge base on the temporomandibular joint in relation to its growth and development, specifically for our ethnic group; to guide dentists on the different changes that occur during the development and maturation of the human temporomandibular joint structures; to guide healthcare professionals in identifying possible embryonic pathologies related to the development of the temporomandibular joint; and to establish the chronological parameters for the appearance and differentiation of all the different components of the temporomandibular joint. For the purposes of this study, it is essential to emphasize the research conducted by Doctors Vasquez and Velasco, drawn from various studies on the growth and development of the structures of the temporomandibular joint in embryos, fetuses, and adults, spanning from the beginning of this century to the present day. Subsequently, the chronological sequence of appearance of each of the structures of the temporomandibular joint is described, specifically during the period between the seventh and twenty-fifth weeks of intrauterine life.Los patrones de crecimiento y desarrollo de las estructuras de la Articulación Temporomandibular con los que se cuenta en la actualidad, son de origen norteamericano y europeo. Por tal motivo surge la necesidad de conocer un patrón de crecimiento y desarrollo de las estructuras de la articulación temporomandibular de la Población Colombiana; para lograr un acertado diagnóstico y un efectivo tratamiento. Los propósitos de este estudio fueron: Iniciar una base de conocimientos sobre la Articulación Temporomandibular en relación a su crecimiento y desarrollo orientada a nuestro grupo étnico; Orientar al Odontólogo sobre los diferentes cambios que ocurren durante el desarrollo y maduración de las estructuras de la articulación temporomandibular Humana; Encaminar al profesional de la salud , en la identificación de las posibles patologías de origen embrionario relacionadas, con el desarrollo de la articulación temporomandibular ; y Establecer los parámetros cronológicos de aparición y diferenciación de todos los diferentes componentes de la Articulación Temporomandibular. Para efectos de este estudio es indispensable hacer énfasis en las investigaciones realizadas por los Doctores Vázquez y Velasco ,extractada de los diversos estudios que acerca del Crecimiento y Desarrollo de las estructuras de la Articulación Temporomandibular en embriones ,fetos y adultos; en un periodo comprendido entre principios de este siglo hasta nuestros días.
