The fact that they all presented a similar clinical pattern, primarily characterized by sexually transmitted infections, and the lack of understanding of the disease at the time led to the initial assumption that it was a new illness exclusive to homosexuals. However, starting in 1982, similar symptoms were described in non-homosexual individuals, especially hemophiliacs, Haitians, drug addicts, those who had received multiple blood transfusions, and the sexual partners of AIDS patients. The term AIDS (Human Immunodeficiency Syndrome) was coined, with epidemiological characteristics that pointed to a new infectious, fatal, and transmissible disease. Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is an epidemic that significantly impacts dental practice, regardless of geographic location. The oral cavity is a frequent site for the clinical manifestations of the disease; therefore, it is important to recognize it and provide appropriate treatment to our patients.Los primeros casos de SIDA se diagnosticaron en el año de 1981, entre jóvenes homosexuales de USA. El hecho de manifestar todos ellos un patrón clínico similar, representado básicamente por enfermedades de transmisión sexual y el desconocimiento que se tenía de la entidad hizo pensar que se tratara de una nueva enfermedad, patrimonio de los homosexuales. Sin embargo a partir de 1982 se describieron padecimientos similares en personas no homosexuales especialmente en hemofílicos, haitianos, drogadictos, politransfundidos y en compañeros sexuales de pacientes enfermos por Io se le denominó el término de SIDA (Síndrome de Inmunodeficiencia Humana) con características epidemiológicas que orientaban hacia una nueva enfermedad infecciosa, mortal y transmisible. El síndrome de inmunodeficiencia adquirida es una epidemia que afecta de manera importante la práctica odontológica, sin importar la localización geográfica.
