A brief examination of the amalgam, along with a description of the materials to be used, will help in making the appropriate selection. First the amalgam will be considered as such; its manufacturing and handling. Generally the materials chosen for its manufacture are Mercury and amalgam alloy, which is a combination of silver, tin, copper and sometimes zinc. In its manipulation, the Mercury-alloy relationship, crushing technique and time, condensation technique and the final finish will be taken into account. Later we will see the corrosion of amalgam, its causes, types, and the different handling methods to prevent undesirable corrosion, since in this way a good clinical restoration is produced.La amalgama es uno de los materiales restaurativos más utilizados, especialmente en dientes posteriores, sometidos a un alto choque masticatorio por su aceptable resistencia. Un breve examen de la amalgama, junto con una descripción de los materiales a utilizar ayudará a conseguir la selección apropiada. Primero se considerará la amalgama como tal; su fabricación y manipulación. Generalmente los materiales elegidos para su fabricación son el Mercurio y la aleación de amalgama, que es una combinación de plata, estaño, cobre y algunas veces cinc. En su manipulación se tendrán en cuenta la relación Mercurio - aleación, técnica y tiempo de trituración, técnica de condensación y el terminado final.
