A more appropriate name for this phase is the "etiological phase," since the treatment eliminates the etiological factors in periodontal disease, but the term "phase I" or "initial phase" is more frequently used. It is a common mistake to perform this phase of treatment immediately after the surgical phase, when necessary, as well as to subject the patient to a simple maintenance phase. The initial phase of treatment should be immediately followed by a maintenance phase; follow-up appointments should be scheduled, and the patient's care should be maintained at regular intervals. Periodontal surgery and restorative procedures are performed while the patient has unoperated areas of the mouth in the maintenance phase.Se dirige a la extirpación de todos los irritantes locales que pueden causar inflamación gingival y a la instrucción y motivación del paciente en el control de placa.
