In this chapter, the author has selected some general conditions that, in his opinion, commonly present in patients at the age of "full dentures" and that pose problems for the dentist in terms of diagnosis. It should not be forgotten that some diseases may first manifest in the oral cavity, and that the dentist is the first to discover the signs and symptoms of a general disease that the patient is unaware of. The dentist should clearly understand the oral signs and symptoms of these diseases in great detail, as well as other general characteristics and the tests necessary to establish a definitive diagnosis. It is not the dentist's responsibility to ensure that someone suffering from a general disease receives appropriate treatment.Existe una gran variedad de enfermedades locales o generales que afectan los maxilares o las mucosas bucales. En este capítulo el autor ha escogido algunas afecciones generales selectas que, en su opinión, suelen presentarse en pacientes en la edad de las "dentaduras completas" y que resultan problemáticas para el dentista en cuanto a su diagnóstico. No hay que olvidar que algunas enfermedades pueden manifestarse primero en la cavidad bucal y que el dentista es el primero en descubrir los signos y síntomas de una enfermedad general que desconoce el paciente. El dentista deberá conocer con claridad los signos y síntomas bucales de estas enfermedades con gran detalle, además de otras características generales y las pruebas necesarias para establecer un diagnóstico definitivo.
