For this reason, the intervention of the Colombian government became necessary in order to guarantee the protection of citizens’ fundamental rights, which were established in the 1991 Political Constitution. In addition, institutions such as the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences have been providing services to prosecutors and judges through consultations on personal injuries, age assessments, malpractice cases, and other matters, not only in areas related to medicine, but also through advisory services in the field of dentistry. It is worth noting that with the creation of the Office of the Attorney General of the Nation under the 1991 Political Constitution, the Technical Investigation Corps was also established. This institution incorporated dental professionals who, since then, have strengthened the services that had previously been provided exclusively by the dentists of the Institute of Legal Medicine. However, there are areas in which the dentists of the Technical Investigation Corps do not intervene, such as consultations regarding personal injury cases; in this field, the Institute of Legal Medicine has qualified personnel who perform this work competently. Throughout history, a series of events have occurred through which many individuals have been identified by means of their oral and dental characteristics. The increase in dentists specialized in the forensic field has resulted in better services for judges and prosecutors, leading to improved administration of justice. It should be remembered that in Colombia the phenomenon of disappearances has increased dramatically in recent years. This has also caused an increase in unidentified bodies (NN corpses). Because of this situation, institutions such as the Office of the Attorney General have taken on the challenge of identifying these victims and locating missing persons. For this reason, the Technical Investigation Corps has formed interdisciplinary teams composed of professionals in medicine, dentistry, anthropology, and specialized technicians in criminalistics and investigation.Nuestro país no se ha quedado atrás en estos eventos; más a fin, si tenemos en cuenta que venimos sufriendo una oleada de violencia hace ya varias décadas. Razón por fa cual, se hizo necesaria la intervención del gobierno colombiano con el objeto de garantizar el cumplimiento de los derechos fundamentales de los ciudadanos, los cuales quedaron consignados en la Constitución Política de 1991. Además, organismos como el Instituto Nacional de Medicina Legal y Ciencias Forenses, viene prestando sus servicios a fiscales y a jueces en asesorías sobre lesiones personales, dictámenes de edad, mala práctica, etc., no solamente en los aspectos que competen al área médica, sino que también se han venido prestando asesorías en el área odontológica. Cabe anotar, que, al crearse la fiscalía general de la nación, con la Constitución Política de 1991, se creó también el Cuerpo Técnico de Investigación. Organismo que incorporo a profesionales de la odontología, los cuales, desde ese entonces, han venido reforzando los servicios que antes eran prestados únicamente por los odontólogos del Instituto de Medicina Legal. Sin embargo, existen áreas en las cuales los odontólogos del Cuerpo Técnico de Investigación no intervienen, como es el caso de las asesorías por lesiones personales; área en la cual, El Instituto de Medicina legal cuenta con funcionarios que cumplen dicha labor de una manera idónea. A través de la historia, se han presentado una serie de sucesos por medio de los cuales se ha llegado a reconocer gran cantidad de personas por las características bucodentales. El incremento de odontólogos especializados en el área forense ha redundado en una mejor prestación de servicios a los jueces y fiscales, redundando esto, en una mejor administración de justicia. Recordemos que en Colombia el fenómeno de la desaparición se ha incrementado durante los últimos años de una manera escandalosa. generado que los cadáveres NN, igualmente se hayan incrementado. Por este mismo hecho, Instituciones como la fiscalía general de la Nación, han tornado como reto, la Identificación de estas víctimas y la ubicación de las personas desaparecidas.
