In restorations performed for small caries conditions, dentists often choose amalgam fillings and discard inlays. These restorations, based on the fact that these types of restorations must meet characteristics such as function, tooth protection, durability, contour, sealing, adaptation, oral tolerance, and, finally, avoid galvanic currents when other metals are present in the mouth. These characteristics are not always met in clinical practice. Therefore, it is necessary to make some observations regarding amalgam fillings to assess their usefulness compared to inlays. Amalgam preparations require retentive forms, which leave enamel without dentin support and cause fracture.Las incrustaciones se presentan más beneficiosas que otros tipos de restauraciones, pero requieren mayor habilidad y conocimientos. En restauraciones realizadas en afecciones cariosas pequeñas, muchas veces el odontólogo toma partida de las amalgamas y desecha las incrustaciones, partiendo del hecho que las restauraciones de este tipo deben cumplir con características como función, protección del diente, durabilidad, contorno, sellado, adaptación, tolerancia en la boca y por último, evitar corrientes galvánicas cuando existen otros metales en boca, características que no siempre se cumplen en la práctica clínica, por lo tanto es necesario hacer algunas observaciones respecto a las obturaciones en amalgama, para apreciar su utilidad en comparación con las incrustaciones.
