MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study. The object of study was knowledge of dentoalveolar trauma. Participation was open to all members of the school community who wished to participate. The sample consisted of 862 people (teachers, parents, and students). RESULTS: 45% of the population reported being aware of the existence of dentoalveolar trauma; 33% reported having received information about the topic; 28% identified situations in which dentoalveolar trauma occurs; 47% of the students reported having suffered blows to the face; 17% of these accidents occurred in the street; and in 18% of the cases, the most affected area was the lips. In the event of dentoalveolar trauma, 90% of the population would seek emergency dental care. 56% believe that the best way to prevent it is through educational programs, and 59% are unaware of the potential consequences of dentoalveolar trauma. CONCLUSIONS: Of the 862 surveys regarding dentoalveolar trauma, 444 were from San Gabriel School, 257 from Pompilio School, and 161 from Rincón Santo School. The respondents' socioeconomic status falls within strata 2 and 3. Females predominate; the ages of respondents range from 13 to 63 years old; the most frequent location for the trauma is the street, followed by school, home, and other places such as the coliseum, respectively. The most frequently affected facial area is the lips, followed by the nose, teeth, gums, and tongue.Identificar el conocimiento acerca del trauma dentoalveolar en la comunidad educativa de los colegios: San Gabriel, Pompilio Martínez y Rincón Santo del municipio de Cajica II semestre de 2006. MATERIALES Y MÉTODOS: Estudio Descriptivo Transversal, Objeto de Estudio Conocimiento de Trauma dentoalveolar. Se incluyó en el estudio a la comunidad escolar que deseara participar. La muestra fue de 862 personas (profesores, padres de familia y escolares). RESULTADOS: El 45% de la población dice saber de la existencia del trauma dentoalveolar; el 33% dice haber recibido información acerca del tema, el 28% identifica las situaciones en las que se presenta trauma dentoalveolar, el 47% de los escolares han sufrido golpes en la cara, el 17% de estos accidentes sucedieron en la Calle, en un 18% de los casos la zona más afectada fue los labios. En caso de presentarse trauma dentoalveolar el 90% de la población asistiría de urgencias al odontólogo, El 56% considera que la mejor forma de prevenir es realizando programas educativos y el 59% no sabe acerca de las secuelas que puede ocasionar el trauma dentoalveolar. CONCLUSIONES: De las 862 encuestas acerca de trauma dentoalveolar, 444 pertenecen al colegio San Gabriel; 257 al Pompilio y 161 a Rincón Santo. La composición económica de los encuestados se encuentra entre los estratos 2 y 3.
