During the eruption of replacement teeth, many activities occur simultaneously: the primary tooth resorbs, the permanent root lengthens, the alveolar process increases in height, and the permanent tooth moves in the bone. Permanent teeth do not begin erupting until after the crown is complete. They pass over the crest of the alveolar process when approximately two-thirds of the root has formed and pierce the gingival margin when approximately three-quarters of the root is formed. It takes 2 to 5 years for posterior teeth to reach the alveolar crest after completing their crowns, and 12 to 20 months for them to reach occlusion after reaching the alveolar margin.
