MATERIALS AND METHODS: A sample of 185 students, enrolled between the 6th and 10th semesters at the University Institution Colegios de Colombia - UNICOC during the first semester of 2010, was used. The variables studied in the population were age, sex, socioeconomic stratum, semester, marital status, whether the student is head of household, dependents, other activities they were pursuing at the time of the survey, number of people they live with and their relationship to them, personality type in terms of extroversion, student stress level, social groups with which they interact and from which they receive economic and/or emotional support, level of self-perceived support, and cumulative academic average; identified with a 21-item questionnaire. RESULTS: In the surveyed population, the average age was 22.6 years; 76.2% were female; 58.7% were single; 96.8% were not heads of household; 21% of the population reported sports as their most frequent activity; 54.3% lived with their parents; 64.5% considered themselves extroverted; and 60.5% of the students received parental support. 70.3% of the students had an academic performance level of 3.0 or higher. CONCLUSIONS: Gender, participation in other activities, and parental support were found to influence students' academic performance.OBJETIVO GENERAL: Identificar algunos factores sociales que se relacionan con el promedio académico de los estudiantes de la Institución Universitaria Colegios de Colombia - UNICOC, durante el primer semestre del 2010. MATERIALES Y MÉTODOS: Se conto con una muestra de 185 estudiantes, matriculados entre VI y X semestre en la Institución Universitaria Colegios de Colombia - UNICOC durante el primer semestre del 2010. Las variables estudiadas en la población fueron edad, sexo, estrato socioeconómico, semestre, estado civil, si el estudiante es cabeza de familia, las personas que tiene a cargo, desarrollo de otras actividades que cursaba en el momento de la encuesta, número de personas con quien convive y el parentesco, tipo de personalidad en cuanto a extroversión, condición de estrés del estudiante, grupos sociales con lo que interactúa y de los que recibe apoyo económico y/o emocional, nivel de apoyo auto percibido y promedio académico acumulado; identificadas con un cuestionario de 21 ítems. RESULTADOS: en la población encuestada la edad promedio fue 22.6 años, género femenino 76.2%; solteros el 58.7%; 96.8% no eran cabeza de familia; 21% de la población reportó deporte como la actividad más realizada; 54.3% vive con sus padres; el 64.5% se siente extrovertidos; el 60.5% de los estudiantes recibió apoyo de los padres. El 70.3% de los estudiantes presentaron un rendimiento académico superior o igual a 3.0.
