Over the years, concern for restoring not only function but also aesthetics has increased among both specialists and patients. As a result, the development of aesthetic-related surgical procedures has become increasingly important within this field. To determine the type of surgical treatment to be performed, a complete physical and oral evaluation must be considered in order to define the surgical procedure, postoperative care, and healing process, ultimately leading to final restoration with definitive fixed partial prostheses. The purpose of this review was to understand the importance for students and dentists of combining functionality and aesthetics in restorative procedures performed at the Colombian Dental College. This is because many cases have been observed in which, at the end of treatment, students find that function has been restored, but aesthetics has not been fully achieved. The general objective is to describe the correction of gingival dimensions through the increase of alveolar ridge volume using soft tissue grafts, thereby restoring the lost aesthetics of the patient caused by different etiologies. The methodology used was inductive in nature. Surveys were conducted, showing that a high percentage of students do not know or have not applied alveolar ridge augmentation using soft tissue grafts to improve patient aesthetics in their clinical practice.La odontología restaurativa existe como alternativa de tratamiento desde hace muchas décadas, sin embargo, esta buscaba devolverle la función masticatoria a los pacientes sin tener en cuenta como se lleva a cabo la totalidad del tratamiento. Con el paso de los años la preocupación por devolver no solo funcionalidad, sino también estética fue incrementándose tanto en especialistas como en pacientes, por lo que el desarrollo de cirugías a favor de la estética comenzó a tener un auge importante dentro de este campo. Para determinar el tipo de tratamiento quirúrgico a seguir, se debe tener en cuenta una completa evaluación física - oral y de esta manera definir el procedimiento quirúrgico, los cuidados postoperatorios y la cicatrización, llegando finalmente a la restauración con prótesis parciales fijas definitivas. El motivo de nuestra revisión fue el de conocer la importancia que debe tener para estudiantes y odontólogos, la funcionalidad combinada con la estética en los procedimientos restaurativos que se van a realizar dentro del Colegio Odontológica Colombiano. Ya que se han presentado muchos casos en los cuales al final del tratamiento el estudiante descubre que se ha devuelto la funcionalidad, pero la estética no ha sido totalmente reestablecida. El objetivo general es describir la corrección de la dimensión gingival, mediante el aumento del volumen del reborde alveolar con tejidos blandos devolviendo así, la estética perdida de la paciente ocasionada por diferentes etiologías.
