Of a sample of 70 teeth, 42 met the inclusion criteria. The relationship of the buccal surface of the first permanent molar to the functional occlusal plane was established; the buccal surface was used as a reference because, in most cases, the posteroanterior radiographs did not show overlapping structures. The study was conducted in vitro to avoid overlapping in an in vivo study and thus allow for the measurement of the resulting angle between the functional occlusal plane and the perpendicular drawn to it, or functional longitudinal axis, with the plane of the buccal surface of the first permanent molar.Esta investigación tuvo como objetivo abordar la falta de comprensión entre los ortodoncistas respecto al posicionamiento dental transversal, basándose en radiografías posteroanteriores y un análisis de las características anatómicas del primer molar permanente, tanto superior como inferior. De una muestra de 70 dientes, 42 cumplieron con los criterios de inclusión. Se estableció la relación de la superficie bucal del primer molar permanente con el plano oclusal funcional; la superficie bucal se utilizó como referencia porque, en la mayoría de los casos, las radiografías posteroanteriores no mostraron superposición de estructuras.
