It is widely used in the repair of occlusal, gingival, and proximal lesions. They use a "cradle" effect for retention and exert a certain amount of pressure against the tooth walls. This pressure becomes significant when the tooth bears occlusal forces. An inlay can only be used when a considerable thickness of intact structure remains, because the inlay merely replaces the lost structures, without protecting the rest of the tooth in any way. The inlay must be modified so that the load is distributed evenly over a large surface area, so that excess stresses are not concentrated precisely on the tooth bearing the restoration. The concentration of excess force can manifest itself with various causes of clinical processes; the most frequent are a cusp fracture, leaks, and later, it frequently leads to caries.
