It seeks to resolve problems of identification and reconstruction of events through the description and analysis of injuries and the assessment of bodily harm in dentistry. It also deals with the proper handling and examination of dental evidence in the interest of justice. Currently, the dental chart is one of the most widely used tools for identifying corpses in mass disasters, individual deaths, or in situations where identification is difficult. Furthermore, it is currently the first-choice technique for human identification, as it is an accurate tool for dentists, providing a detailed description of an individual's dental characteristics. The dental examination of the deceased, or postmortem examination, is essential for verifying the identity of the corpse, looking for clinical and physical signs such as dentures, missing teeth, or any other identifying information. It is the most widely used identification technique worldwide, along with fingerprints.La Odontología Legal y Forense es la rama de la odontología que trata de la aplicación de los conocimientos odontológicos, al servicio de la justicia y a la elaboración de leyes correlativas a su especialidad, donde se busca la resolución de problemas de identificación y reconstrucción de hechos mediante descripción y análisis de lesiones y valoración del daño corporal en odontología, además se encarga del manejo y examen adecuado de la evidencia dental en interés de la justicia. En la actualidad la carta dental es una de las herramientas más utilizadas para identificación de cadáveres, en desastres masivos, individuales o en situaciones de difícil reconocimiento. Además, hoy en día es la técnica de primera elección para la identificación humana ya que es una herramienta certera para los odontólogos, por que describe detalladamente las características dentales de un individuo. El examen odontológico del individuo muerto, o examen post mortem, es esencial para comprobar la identidad del cadáver, buscando signos clínicos y físicos como prótesis dentales, ausencias dentarias, o cualquier otra información individualizante.
