This term establishes a distinction between these methods and gingival surgery, i.e., gingivectomy and gingivoplasty, in which the alveolar mucosa is not incised, and osseous surgery, i.e., surgical problems of the alveolar process. Mucogingival surgery is performed in conjunction with gingival and osseous surgery, with the exception of some frenulectomies not associated with a periodontal pocket. Difficult treatment problems arise when the surgical field is the alveolar mucosa. The superficial and structural characteristics of the gingiva and alveolar mucosa are distinct because their functions are different. The fixed gingiva is sometimes called masticatory mucosa because it is adapted to the function of mastication.El término cirugía mucogingival fue sugerido por Friedman como un término genérico para los métodos quirúrgicos plásticos relativos a la unión mucogingival y a sus relaciones con la encía fija, la mucosa alveolar, las inserciones de los frenillos y de los músculos y la base del vestíbulo oral. Este término establece una distinción entre estos métodos y la cirugía gingival, es decir, la gingivectomía y la gingivoplastia, en las cuales no es incidida la mucosa alveolar y la cirugía ósea, es decir, los problemas quirúrgicos del proceso alveolar. La cirugía mucogingival se realiza juntamente con la cirugía gingival y la ósea, con excepción de alguna frenectomía no asociada con una bolsa periodontal. Cuando el campo quirúrgico es la mucosa alveolar surgen difíciles problemas de tratamiento.
