A study was conducted with an initial sample of 180 patients, of whom 67 responded to a survey applied to both men and women aged between 30 and 75 years who were rehabilitated with removable partial dentures. Variables related to knowledge of oral hygiene and difficulties in the use of this type of prosthesis were analyzed. The results showed that 74.6% of patients reported brushing their teeth three times a day, considered an adequate habit, 24.4% brushed twice a day, and 3% once a day. However, a discrepancy was observed between reported habits and problems described in the literature, suggesting possible deficiencies in actual knowledge about oral hygiene. It was concluded that patient education should be improved to optimize the use and maintenance of removable partial dentures.El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar los conocimientos y dificultades de higiene oral en pacientes rehabilitados con prótesis parcial removible en las clínicas del Colegio Odontológico Colombiano, sede Santiago de Cali, durante el segundo semestre de 2004. Se realizó un estudio con una muestra inicial de 180 pacientes, de los cuales 67 respondieron a una encuesta aplicada a personas de ambos sexos entre 30 y 75 años, rehabilitadas con prótesis parcial removible. Se analizaron variables relacionadas con el conocimiento sobre higiene oral y las dificultades en el uso de este tipo de prótesis. Los resultados mostraron que el 74,6% de los pacientes reportó cepillarse tres veces al día, considerado un hábito adecuado, el 24,4% lo hacía dos veces al día y el 3% una vez al día. Sin embargo, se evidenció una discrepancia entre los hábitos reportados y los problemas descritos en la literatura, lo que sugiere posibles deficiencias en el conocimiento real sobre higiene oral.
