This is especially the case with third molars. During the course of development, the tooth may have assumed an unusual position, preventing it from following the normal eruption path and thus assuming an abnormal position within the alveolar ridge. The teeth most likely to become impacted are the canines and third molars. Regardless of the specific terminology, any tooth that has failed to assume a normal functional position in the alveolar arch, that has not erupted or only partially erupted, and that serves no useful purpose, should be extracted to avoid future complications, such as the development of dentifrice, periapical lesions, dental caries, and chronic irritation of the adjacent tissues.DETENIDO: Cuando teniendo una posición aceptable para erupcionar algo lo retiene.
