These patients often do not receive basic oral care before, during, and after treatment, such as the elimination of infectious foci and necessary oral restoration, not to mention the application of preventive measures. Therefore, and with the collaboration of the National Cancer Institute E.S.E., a historical, retrospective, descriptive study was conducted on 7000 medical records corresponding to patients treated at that institution during the period between January 1993 and June 1994, in order to determine the protocol adopted before, during and after the type of cytotoxic therapy used, so as to propose modifications in future studies, if necessary, according to the results obtained and guided by protocols reported in the literature and approved in other institutions in different parts of the world, which would constitute a relief in the course of treatment of the population affected by cancer who attend the specialized institutions of the country.El motivo que impulsó a la escogencia del tema y a la ejecución del estudio es la poca importancia que se presta al manejo de las complicaciones orales en pacientes que deben ser sometidos a terapia citotóxica en instituciones especializadas de Colombia y a las cuales no siempre se les brindan los cuidados básicos orales previos, durante y posteriores al tratamiento, tales como la eliminación de focos infecciosos y la restauración oral necesaria, por no hacer mención de la aplicación de medidas preventivas.
