These data provide a quantitative assessment of the importance for both orthodontists and surgeons, as well as general dentists. Because the greatest difficulties occur with the lower third molar, the majority of this review is devoted to analyzing this tooth specifically. It is important to highlight that all the studies reviewed in this work by different researchers have presented very significant advances that can be used as a resource for preventing many negative situations involving the third molar. However, not everything has been said, and several conclusions have subsequently been re-evaluated. Según Bjork, aproximadamente el 45% de la población habrá de tener terceros molares inferiores retenidos el 75% de estos serán extraídos. Estos datos nos dan un valor cuantitativo de la importancia tanto para el ortodoncista y el cirujano como para el odontólogo general. Debido a que las mayores dificultades se presentan en el tercer molar inferior, la mayor parte de esta revisión esta encausada a analizar este diente específicamente. Es importante resaltar que todos los estudios revisados en este trabajo de diferentes investigadores, han presentado adelantos muy significativos que se pueden utilizar como recurso para la prevención de muchas situaciones negativas que presenta el tercer molar. Sin embargo no todo se ha dicho, y varias conclusiones posteriormente han sido revaluadas.
