It is a true synovial joint, however, it has unique anatomical and functional development characteristics which distinguish it from other joints of this type. Unlike other synovial joints, the articular surfaces of the temporomandibular joint are not composed of cartilage. These surfaces, like those of the central portion of the articular disc, consist of free nerves, and a dense collective fiber; such articular areas may be called fibrocartilage; The only histological characteristics of this joint are a long and extensive distinctive embryology which, however, is directly related to the evolutionary process which allows the appearance of the temperomandibular joint in mammals.La articulación temporo mandibular está considerada como de amplio movimiento entre el cóndilo de la mandíbula y el hueso temporal; específicamente su porción escamosa. Es una verdadera articulación sinovial, sin embargo, posee características únicas de desarrollo anatómico y funcional las cuales lo distinguen del resto de articulaciones de este tipo.
